SHS BOYS SWIM AND DIVE: More Spartans race to make state 2A roster

Trent Powers posted an individual state-qualifying time in the 100-yard freestyle and the Spartans’ 200 freestyle relay also guaranteed itself a spot at February’s state meet Thursday as the Sumner High boys swim team topped Decatur 98-85.

The meet with the Gators also gave the Spartans a peek at the King County Aquatic Center where the state meet will be raced.

The 200 freestyle relay of Zane Gustafson, Connor Powers-Hubbard, Pietro Postal and Powers finished in second-place with a time of 1 minute, 35.99 seconds.

The 200 medley relay bested its time with a 1:50.23 showing, just shy of a state time.

Powers-Hubbard was also shy of a 200 freestyle state time. He dropped 2 seconds with a winning time of 1:55.15.

Sam Parks dropped nearly 5 seconds off his 200 individual medley time for third.

Evan Quaschnik won the diving with 186.05 points. David Kakuk scored his personal-best for diving with a third-place finish.

The Spartans swept the 100 freestyle. Powers with his state time of 51.36 Postal second and Neil Bateman third.

Shayd Breckenridge dropped almost 10 seconds on his 500 freestyle for a 6:34.49, just shy of a district-qualifying time, but good for third place.

Rigsby placed second in the 100 backstroke with a nearly 10-second drop. Jobe Layton dropped 8.78 seconds, nearly making the district cut.

Powers-Hubbard bested his state-qualifying 100 breaststroke time with a winning 1:03.81.

Gustafson just missed the state cut with his 1:07.29 for second.

The Spartans closed out the day by finishing 1-2 in the 400 freestyle relay. Sumner’s A team of Rigsby, Bateman, Postal and Parks won the race with the B team of Curtis Downing, Josh Goodsell, Severn Anderson and Reid Selmer in second.
