SHS BOYS TENNIS: Spartans reloading and ready for 2010 season

Two years ago the senior-laden Sumner High boys tennis team won the league title. Graduation decimated the roster, but coach Chris Heacox has spent the past year or more building a young squad’s skills and experience. Those juniors and seniors are ready to stake their claim.

The Spartans will be led by senior Grant Fulton at No. 1 singles and senior Jacob Heuett in the other singles position. Juniors Will Mortell and Hunter Bleha also return and are expected to join forces at No. 1 doubles.

Heacox also is excited about a promising freshman class.

Sumner ventures into a different league this season, making the move from the South Puget Sound League 3A to the SPSL 2A.

“We’re going to match up so much better,” said Heacox, who is in his sixth year as leader. “I don’t think there’s any match we can’t go into and think we won’t win.”

The season started fast and furious with home league matches today, Wednesday, with Fife, Friday with White River and Monday with Clover Park and a nonleague away match Thursday at Bonney Lake.

With two matches scheduled against each team in the league, home and away, it makes for a full schedule. Heacox likes the dynamic playing everyone in the league twice brings.

“It gives us an opportunity to mix up the line up,” he said.
