A veteran bunch of male harriers from Sumner overcame the mismatch in classification between their Class 2A and the Class 3A Bonney Lake group of runners in nonleague, intradistrict cross country action, caging the Panthers 21-36.
Five out of the initial seven finishers wore purple jerseys as Coltin Tanner snapped the finish line twine by completing the 2.43-mile course with a clocking of 13 minutes, 52 seconds, immediately followed by Arturo Perez, Cory Brandt, Shaun LaVigne and Reid Selmer.
On the girl’s side, everything was reversed, as the Panther joggers prevailed. The female tandem of junior juggernauts Sierra Espinal and Marie Wilson crossed the termination point of the course in unison as Espinal set the pace for the girls with a time of 16:13, but Wilson was right on her heels, leaning across the stripe only 12 seconds later.
With Espinal and Wilson finishing one and two, Bonney Lake’s girls registered a 24-34 victory. Panther Hope Dickson finished with a time of 18:21, good enough for a fifth-place slot.
Sumner runners will join Fife Sept. 22 at 4:30 p.m. on the Spanaway Lake Golf course for the opening three way SPSL 2A event, being hosting by Washington. Bonney Lake will travel to Enumclaw’s Nolte State Park.
