The Sumner High cross country team is experiencing the calm before the storm as not all of its girl runners are eligible yet and the boys are showing signs of being a contender this season.

“We haven’t had any league meets yet, but our boys are looking as if they are going to be pack runners this year,” coach Kristin Martin said. “At the Enumclaw Invite last week our junior boy Jobie Layton was running at a pretty good pace and our other four boys were in a bunch right behind him. That sort of surprised me. I think our boys are going to do alright this time around.

“At the Capital Invite this past weekend in Olympia, on their neat little 2.25-mile course, one of our outstanding freshman prospects, Josh Goodsell ran a 15 flat,” Martin said.

On the girl’s side, there are still a couple of girls who still have to get in the required number of practices to be eligible, but Martin said senior harrier Stephanie Castile, who worked hard in the offseason finished among the Top 20 in the Capital affair that featured 100 runners from across western Washington.

The league campaign commences in earnest today, Wednesday, at Timberline when both Sumner and Enumclaw compete there beginning at 4:30 p.m.
