At Saturday’s subdistrict cross country meet, which included teams from the South Puget Sound League 2A and Nisqually League, both the boys and girls teams from Sumner High qualified for the coming district meet.
For the SHS boys it was a memorable afternoon. For the first time, the Spartans at least shared a portion of the spotlight, tying White River’s cross country group with 12 points to share the SPSL 2A subdistrict title.
For SHS, Jose Hernandez set the pace with a clocking of 17 minutes, 32 seconds. Trailing Hernandez were Cory Brandt, 17:48, Josh Goodsell, 17:56, Jobe Layton, 18:12, Coltin Tanner, 18:13, and Reid Selmer, 18:45.
The Sumner girls won the subdistrict meet outright behind the 11th place showing of Gabby Phelps, who finished at 20:37. Helping Sumner grab the SPSL 2A pennant were Natasha Wilson, 21:14, Tyeanne Lubking, 22:11, Abby Hensler, 21:36 and Leah Engelhardt, 22:36.
“It was a good day to be a Spartan,” coach Kristin Martin said. “This squad pushes one another to realize their maximum potential and I was proud to be coach of such an amazing bunch of young athletes.”
