Sumner High’s Peter Marth returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for the Spartans’ only touchdown during a 7-6 win over Yelm Thursday on the road.

The game was a crossover matchup between the South Puget Sound League 3A and Western Cascade Conference teams who didn’t make the Class 3A playoffs.

The game was a defensive battle for most of the night.

Yelm scored in the fourth quarter, but the Spartans blocked the extra-point attempt to seal the win.

The Spartans finished the season 3-7 overall.
