Just when fans think the Sumner High’s girls soccer crew has run out of productive forwards, coach Robi Turley pulls another young and adept scoring striker out of her hat.
The June graduation of all-South Puget Sound League 3A forward Kaylee Holloway left some big shoes to fill, but Turley has found a young lady that might be a worthy replacement.
Kaylie Rozell, a sophomore transfer from New Mexico, “is really a dynamite forward, who basically just fell in our lap,” Turley said.
But the new striker is just the tip of the iceberg as far as talent goes. Three standouts that remain from last year’s group include this year’s senior team captains Taylor Hobart and Kelsey Hanson as well as junior forward Megan Fenton.
Last year was a quiet outing for the Spartans’ skilled midfielder, who was rehabilitating a knee injury, but Turley says Fenton is back at full strength.
Sumner barely made the playoffs last year with a 4-4-4 league mark, but seemed to get better during postseason play, finally losing in the first round of the state tournament.
The Spartans took on Enumclaw Tuesday night and play at Bonney Lake Thursday.
