Sumner High’s Brandon Barlow and Austin Spanier qualified for the Class 2A state boys golf tournament in May with a Top 6 finish Oct. 19 at Gold Mountain Golf Complex in Bremerton.
Barlow and Spanier, both juniors, finished second and third respectively. Barlow shot a 78 for Round 2 to give him a two-day stroke total of 157. Spanier finished at 80 and 83 for a two-day total of 163. Sumner was also the team winner.
Finishers between seventh and 15th place, like SHS sophomores Kai Taylor and Joe Bethards, will get another shot at making the state tournament. They will compete for the final spots in the spring.
Tom Murphy qualified as an alternate for the spring qualifying tournament.
SHS’s Rebecca Turcotte earned the final spot into May’s Class 3A state girls golf tournament with a Round 2 score of 88. Turcotte shot 99 for the opening round to give her a two-day total of 187 to tie with Jasmine King of Washington for the sixth. She won a playoff for the final spot.
Karleigh Warner finished eighth, shooting 94 and 102 for a 196, to advance to the spring qualifying tournament and a shot at earning a spot at the state tournament.
Bonney Lake
Coach Sharon Lovinger said Bonney Lake High sophomore Anna Babbitt could still make the district’s spring state qualifying tournament. Babbitt finished the two-day South Puget Sound League 3A medalist tournament in Bremerton Oct. 19 in 15th place.
