The Sumner Spartan girls soccer team found itself with a 1-1 record following a tandem of nonleague tilts against Enumclaw and Bonney Lake.

The Spartan booters got their 2011 campaign off to a rousing start Sept. 6 by trimming Enumclaw 2-1. Junior forward and 2010’s SPSL 2A Most Valuable Player Kaylie Rozell drew first blood against the Hornets. Spartan senior captain and mid/centerfielder Megan Fenton added the insurance tally in the closing minutes of the second half to break the 1-1 deadlock.

Thursday’s encounter was against Sumner School District foe Bonney Lake and, despite a hard-fought battle against the skilled Panthers – last year’s state 3A runner-up – SHS could not quite pull it off. Rozell had Sumner’s solitary goal, but the purple and gold ultimately suffered a 2-1 setback.

League play began Tuesday, a home game against White River at Sunset Chev Stadium. The Spartans’ next challenge comes  at 7 p.m. Thursday against Eatonville, again at Sunset Chev Stadium.
