In what coach Dana Powers described as an incredible night, the Sumner High boys swim team finished fifth behind champion Sehome and runner-up Interlake at the 2A state swim and dive finals Saturday. Individually, swimmer Trent Powers and diver Evan Quaschnik pushed the Spartans to a top five finish with third-place finishes.
“This team brought 15 swimmers to state,” coach Powers said. “They all swam hard, dove great, cheered each other on and I couldn’t be more proud of the men they have become.”
Powers captured his third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a 22.27-second time and posted his best time in the preliminaries with a 22.17. He also finished fifth in the 100 freestyle in 49.21.
Quaschnik breezed through the diving for his third place finish, posting 329.60 points. Connor Powers-Hubbard earned a sixth-place finish in the 200 freestyle, dropping four seconds off his best time and setting a school record. His time of 1:47.37 seconds topped the SHS record set in 2007 by Alex Ekstrom of 1:50.29.
Powers-Hubbard was also sixth in the 200 breaststroke with a personal best 1:01.19.
Zane Gustafson dropped time and finished sixth in the 200 individual medley and was eighth in the 100 breaststroke, posting his best time in the preliminaries.
The 200 freestyle relay of Gustafson, Powers-Hubbard, Powers and Sam Rigsby finished sixth, swimming their best time in the preliminaries 1:32.65 in the preliminaries and 1:32.91 in the finals.
The 400 freestyle relay of Gustafson, Pietro Postal, Powers and Powers-Hubbard was seventh, racing to their best time with a 3:28.25.
