Connor Powers-Hubbard and Trent Powers raced to state-qualifying times in the Spartan High boys swim team’s two-point loss to Class 3A Auburn Mountainview Thursday.
Powers-Hubbard earned his spot in the state 200-yard individual medley, while Powers will race at state in the 50 freestyle.
Coach Dana Powers said she’s expecting more state times this week.
“Our 200 medley relay is oh so close to making state,” she said.
Against the Lions, Sam Rigsby was just shy of the district cut in the 500 freestyle. Diver David Kakuk finished third and learned six dives in little more than one week to compete in a varsity event.
Sumner also topped Clover Park, 121-36, Washington, 128-30, and Franklin Pierce, 118-31, in the season’s opener Dec. 7 at Clover Park.
Three Spartan relays and six swimmers raced to West-Central District 2A times and qualified for February’s postseason meet.
The 200-yard medley relay of Zane Gustafson, Powers-Hubbard, Powers and Rigsby earned a district time with a 1-minute, 55.02-second finish.
The foursome also scored a district time in the 200 freestyle relay. The Spartans second 200 freestyle relay of Sam Parks, Josh Goodsell, Tanner Harrison and Severn Anderson also raced to a district time.
Gustafson earned a district time in the 200 freestyle with a winning time of 2:11.23.
Powers-Hubbard picked up a 200 individual medley, district time and first-place finish in 2:17.78 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.59.
Powers earned a first-place finish and district time in the 200 butterfly in 1:02.56 and 50 freestyle.
The Sumner swim team have also been busy elves in the community, choosing three names off of the Bonney Lake Giving Tree and purchasing and wrapping those gifts for the communities needy.
