With a corps of top-notch performers returning, Sumner High coach Dana Powers is looking for the Spartans’ boys swim team to make a splash at districts, and hopefully at state.
The Spartans return three from their 11th-place, state 200-yard freestyle relay.
Connor Powers-Hubbard, Trent Powers and Zane Gustafson are back, so the only hole to fill is that of Brandon Richison, who graduated. It’s the same for the team’s 200 medley relay, where Richison filled the butterfly leg.
She said Powers can fill either the butterfly or freestyle leg of the relay, so she’s just waiting to see what surfaces.
“We’re looking for that fourth person to step up for the relay,” coach Powers said.
The foursome also raced in the 400 freestyle relay, where they finished 15th at state.
Individually, Powers, a senior, placed 14th in the 50 freestyle with a finals time of 22.98 and his coach thinks that time can go lower.
Junior Powers-Hubbard earned a 17th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke at state and a 20th-place finish in the 200 freestyle, also times she think can fall.
“He’s bigger and stronger this year,” she said.
She also has high expectations for Gustafson, who competed in the distance events, the 200 and 500 freestyle.
The bar is also set high for Spartan diver Evan Quaschnik, a senior, who earned a 19th-place finish at state in February.
“He’s going in with numbers,” Powers said of the transition the Spartans are making from the 3A classification to 2A. “He’s really in control of his body and has good execution.”
About a dozen swimmers return to the program, all working hard to drop time, and seven are newcomers.
Also back in the water are Sam Parks, Sam Riggsby, Shayd Breckenridge and Severn Anderson.
“It’ll be fun to see what shakes out,” Powers said.
