SHS TENNIS: As team waits for possible champion title, Henken and Anderson have bigger fish to fry

While the Sumner High girls tennis team waits to see if will be declared league champion, Taylor Henken and Kyla Anderson have bigger fish to fry. The Spartan doubles team will be at the Class 2A state tennis tournament Friday and Saturday at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on the University of Washington campus in Seattle.

First round draws for the doubles team were not available Sunday.

The pair entered the West Central District tournament as the No. 8 doubles seed, but came out of the tournament fourth for their state berth.

“They played excellent,” coach Chris Heacox said.

In the district tournament, the Spartan duo won their first match against a team from Kingston in three sets, dropping the first 6-4, but rallying for a 6-0, 6-1 win. In the second round, they beat Sequim, the No. 1 seed from the Olympic league, that advanced them to state. In the semifinals, they lost a close match, sandwiching a 7-6 and 7-5 losses around a 6-3 win. A win in that match would have advanced them to the finals of the tournament.
