Having played only a single match last week, a clutch 3-0 sweep of Steilacoom High in straight sets, the Sumner High volleyball squad improved its record to 7-5 and appears to be a cinch to wrap up a fourth-place finish in the South Puget Sound League 2A and assure a trip to the playoffs.
The Spartans staved off a hungry 4-7 Sentinel crew 25-23, 26-24, 25-17.
The Sumner triumph was spearheaded by a 26 assist effort by setter Janille Panula, who was aided by the combined 22 digs by the tandem of Katie Egbert and Karissa Smith.
Egbert also notched 14 kills against Steilacoom while Danika Guiley also tabulated double-digit kills.
Two more regular season tilts remained on the Spartan slate coming into this week. Sumner hosted White River Monday and was scheduled to play a make-up game with Eatonville on Tuesday.
