A young Sumner wrestling squad is finding early success under the tutelage of first-year coach Matt Harshman, including a 60-9 demolition Thursday at Clover Park in the Spartans’ South Puget Sound League 2A opener.
The victory is already a success over last year, when the Spartans went 0-8 in league duals.
The Spartans got their league campaign off on the right foot as the first weight drawn out of the hat was 160 pounds, where Jared Schliesman pounced on his beleaguered Warrior foe, pinning him 20 seconds into the encounter.
Sumner then went on to record several more first round pins and Cade Little, 119 pounds, Markus Forhan, 125, Jeremy Jackson, 135, Zach Wooding, 145, and Tyler Hidalgo, 152, all won by forfeit to accrue half of Sumner’s 60 points.
The Spartans dominated the heavier weights as 189-pounder Miles Grant pinned his challenger 1 minute, 6 seconds into the match, Nick Ehrienhiam at 215 pounds pinned his opponent in 44 seconds and Sean Bowels wore down Jonathon Delgado, finally burying Delgado’s shoulder blades into the cushion at the 5:29 mark of the heavyweight struggle.
Sumner made the trek to Decatur Saturday for the 15-team Gator Invite, where the Spartans finished eighth with 90.5 points.
The sole Spartan grappler to make it to the championship bout was Wooding, who finished second as he couldn’t quite come away with the crown at 145 pounds. Finishing third was Travis Filleau, 103, and placing fifth were Andrew Andrada, 125, Jackson, 135, Schliesman and Ehrienhiam.
