Shutouts leave Sumner soccer stinging

After enduring a four-game drought without so much as a solitary goal, Sumner High’s soccer team absorbed two more stinging shutout setbacks last week.

After enduring a four-game drought without so much as a solitary goal, Sumner High’s soccer team absorbed two more stinging shutout setbacks last week. These losing efforts dropped Sumner’s overall record to 1-3-2.

Last week’s tandem of blankings, 3-0 to distant Capital High and 4-0 to Plateau foe Enumclaw on Friday, were both non-counters in the SPSL 3A.

In his decade at the helm, Peter Voiles has seen good times and bad, but explained that his still wet-behind-the-ears players understand that there aren’t a lot of veterans in their midst and that they are just trying to improve a little more with each passing contest as they gain experience along the way.

This week’s rendezvous with Franklin Pierce and Clover Park will both be league meetings.

League-leading 5-1 Franklin Pierce visited Sumner’s home facility Tuesday night with the results from Sunset Stadium coming too late to include here.

The Spartans make the journey to Clover Park’s turf Friday to challenge the SPSL 3A’s cellar dweller.
