It was a nearly perfect way to start the 2009-10 White River High wrestling season – but not such a great start for Sumner High.

The Hornets scored eight pins, two technical falls, a major decision and two forfeit victories on their way to topping the Spartans 80-0 Thursday night in the South Puget Sound League 3A opener for both teams.

Kyle Rodarte started the night off with a 51-second pin over Mark Cisneros at heavyweight. White River teammate Tyler Worthen followed it up with a fall over Anthony Martin in 1:08 at 112 pounds.

Hornets Carl Klein, 103 pounds, and Nathan Lindner, 119, each accepted a forfeit.

White River’s Brandon Short pinned Markus Forhan in 1:24 and it took 32 seconds for Roger Rowland to put away Cole Lepper.

Robert Kautzman and Sumner’s Andre Sloan tussled into the second round, with Kautzman sticking the Spartan at the 2:29 mark. SHS’s Zach Wooding wrestled up a weight at 140 to face Alec Williams and was deep into the contest when Williams was determined the winner by technical fall.

It was the same scenario for Hornet Anthony Moore and Spartan Tyler Hidalgo at 145 pounds with Hidalgo eventually earning the technical fall. Caden Pugmire pinned Peter Marth in 1:49.

Conner Leckman scored an 11-3 major decision over SHS’s Alex Bricker, while Austin Bethel, Jeff Kisner and Chase Myers closed out the pinfest for the Hornets. Bethel put away his 171-pound opponent Matthew Wilson in 3:30; Kinser bested Nick Emerheim in 2:53 and Myers took 1 minute exactly to pin Matt Caswell.

The Hornets travel to Auburn Mountainview tonight, Wednesday, and Sumner heads to Bonney Lake. Both contests begin at 7. The two teams head to the Bonney Lake Invitational Saturday.
