Sounders U23 — the Seattle Sounders Football Club development team — defeated the North Sound SeaWolves 1-0 Wednesday night, after a series of close shaves and an especially tense second half.
A thrilling victory to be sure but, for one group of girls, the excitement was on the sidelines of Sunset Chev Stadium.
The Sumner Soccer Club’s under-13 girls team, Explosion, were the honorary ball girls for the game.
“With our home at Sunset Stadium in Sumner, we love getting the local teams out,” Sounders FC spokesman Darren Sawatzky said. “The more involved the better.
“Having the opportunity to see the next level of soccer for young players gives them something to strive for. Having a group of future professional players honing their skills in your community is a huge opportunity for these young players.”
The football club tries to facilitate opportunities such as pre-game clinics for young players, Sawatzky said. Additionally, the U23 players stay after games to sign autographs for any of the young helpers who want them.
Sawatzky added that Sounders FC is interested in more youth involvement, and any clubs and teams who would like to participate can call 206-445-2097.
“The more involved the better,” he said.
