Madison Munger has swam competitively since she was 6-years-old and the years of hard work are evident in her stroke. Munger’s position as team captain for the Sumner High School girls swim team is among her many accomplishments. Together, Munger and the Spartans swam an undefeated season.
Munger is an 18-year-old senior from Lake Tapps. In addition to her role as one of the Spartan’s star swimmers, she works as an accounting assistant at Custom Plus Distributing in Auburn and is an active running start student at Pierce College. When Munger walks with her class in June, she’ll be bringing home a diploma and an Associate of Arts.
The warm California climate, prestigious academics and strong athletic departments draw her to Pepperdine and the University of San Diego for post-high school education. Where ever she goes, she will swim, she said.
Munger’s favorite event to compete in is the 200 individual medley, she said.
“In the 200 IM, you do a little bit of everything,” she said. “I’m more of a middle distance swimmer and it’s more exciting than just one stroke. “
Munger said her parents, friends and Coach Dana Powers are her biggest influences. Her role as team captain brings her joy and confidence.
“I really do enjoy my position as team captain. You’re only as strong as your weakest link because you’re competing as a team. It’s really cool to see the girls improve in something I’m so interested in that I’ve done all my life,” Munger said.
During the off season, Munger competes in club swimming at King County Aquatics Center. She holds the Sumner High School record in the 200 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly and 200 relays. Throughout her high school career to date, she’s earned six first place district titles, five second place district titles, five first place state titles, three second place state titles and numerous third place titles as well.
“Madison has always been a leader in the pool. She has tenacity and quiet determination and doesn’t like to lose,” said Coach Dana Powers. “Madison has been the team captain for two years now and has worked hard to keep the team motivated and together! She has a no nonsense approach to life. She works hard and in the end she will be successful in life due to her work ethic. She has been a State Champion every year in her high school career and I believe she will finish strong this year and go out on top! She will go down as one of the best swimmers in Sumner High School history and I’m proud to be a part of it.”
