The Sumner Spartans improved their season record to 3-1 – and jumped to 2-0 in South Puget Sound League 2A play – with a 42-12, Friday-night pasting of the visiting Clover Park Warriors.

It was a trio of second-half touchdowns that did the trick at Sunset Chev Stadium, as Sumner held a 21-12 lead at half time.

DeJon Lynch had a big night for the Spartans, scoring TDs on respectable runs of 12 and 11 yards before busing loose for an 85-yard jaunt to close out the night’s scoring.

Lohaki Kamau gave Sumner the lead with a 6-yard burst in the first quarter, but the Warriors bounced back with a TD of their own. The back-and-forth nature of the contest continued, with Lynch scoring his first TD of the night, only to see Clover Park answer with a touchdown of its own. Sumner pushed its advantage for good later in the second quarter when Cody Johnson hauled in a scoring pass from Chase Torgison.

Second-half fireworks, aside from Lynch’s two touchdowns, included a second TD run by Kamau.

Kicker Michael Smith was good on all six of his extra-point tries.

The Spartans will be seeking victory No. 4 Friday night when they host league foe Franklin Pierce. The Cardinals shared a piece of the league title a season ago, but are a disappointing 1-3 to start this year’s campaign, including an 0-2 mark in SPSL 2A play. Last week, the Cards were defeated 31-21 by Steilacoom.
