Sumner High’s cross country team competed in its first meet of the season Thursday. The dual meet against Fife and Washington high schools yielded the Spartans two ‘perfect’ races: races in which athletes from one team finish in the top five spots.
The Spartans fielded their perfect races in the boys’ meet against Fife and the girls’ meet against Washington.
“It’s been quite awhile since we’ve had teams run perfect meets,” coach Kristin Chapman said. “The kids worked incredibly hard, so it is a well-deserved honor.”
On the boys side, freshman Nate Weber led the pack with a time of 18 minutes, 17 seconds. He was followed by Arturo Perez (18:36), Coltin Tanner (18:55), Josh Goodsell (19:04) and Jordan Landes (19:09).
Scores for the boys meets were a 15-50 victory against Fife (low score wins), and a 20-39 victory over Washington.
On the girls side, Junior Abi Hensler ran a strong race throughout, taking an early lead and never letting go. She finished first with a 21:11 time. She was followed by Anna Hurd (23:16), Natasha Wilson (23:22), Robi Long (23:32) and Bailey Thomsen (24:10).
Scores for the girls meets were a 15-50 victory over Fife and a 15-50 victory over Washington.
The meets were held at Fife’s home, Celebration Park, known for being a slow and challenging course.
The Spartans trekked to Seaside, Oregon today for the 3-Course meet. On Thursday, they will compete at Ft. Steilacoom against Franklin Pierce and Clover Park for a Warrior-hosted dual meet.
