The Sumner Spartans rolled up a 49-28 victory against Bonney Lake during Friday’s Sunset Bowl.
Sumner improved its overall season record to 2-0.
The win over Bonney Lake was a nonleague game. Sumner is in the South Puget Sound League 2A and Bonney Lake is in the SPSL 3A. The Panthers are 0-2.
Sumner was up 28-21 at the half and went up 42-21 by the end of the third.
Coach Keith Ross wrote in an email, “(The) offense has been great the last two weeks. We are playing very well sticking to our plan.”
DeJon Lynch rushed for 226 yard and receiver Tristian Wedington caught nine balls for 150 yards and two touchdowns.
Quarterback Chase Torgison went 9-12 for 159 yards in the air with three touchdowns and one rushing score.
“He has been fantastic in first two weeks” Ross wrote.
On defense Jace Johnson returned an interception for 71 yards. Ross said Austin Striplin had 12 tackles and two tackles for a loss.
Ross wrote, “Winning the Sunset Bowl is a big deal and gives us bragging rights for the year. Bonney Lake played hard and we had a hard time stopping Robert Combs. He is a tremendous player. It was a fantastic atmosphere and is good for both communities and schools.”
Next up for the Spartans is a league game against Steilacoom. Ross said Sumner beat Steilacoom last year 28-27.
Bonney Lake will travel to Vancouver, Wash. to play Mountain View, a nonleague game.
