Martial arts expo set for Sumner

The Sumner/Bonney Lake Recreation Department, in conjunction with the Buckley Isshin-ryu Karate dojo and the Sumner Judo Club, will host Martial Expo 09, a martial arts seminar for persons age 12 and older May 2 at Sumner High, 1707 Main St.

Ten martial artists from the Seattle/Tacoma area will donate their time teaching a variety of martial arts, including Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Sambo, Goju-ryu, Isshinryu, Kempo, Tai Chi, Judo, Bujitsu and Kelly Worden’s travel wrench self-defense.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Relay For Life to benefit cancer awareness.

Registration will be taken at the door. Doors open at 9 a.m. on the day of the event. The seminar costs $25 per participant or $3 per spectator and the seminar will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Wolfpack hosts registration

Five Valley Wolfpack youth football and cheer teams are registering for play at Sumner High. Returning players are asked to register between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. May 2 and 6 to 8 p.m. May 6. Open enrollment is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 16.

There are the 89ers, usually for 7- to 9-year-old boys and girls; Sweet Peas, 8- to 10-year-olds; Bantams, 9- to 11-year-olds; Midgets, 12- to 13-year olds; and Pea Wees, 13- to 14-year-olds.

Each team consists of approximately 40 players. Football season starts Aug. 1 with practices from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Once school starts, practices are from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with games mostly on Sundays. from September through November.

The five-team cheer squad is at all the games.

Registration costs $135 per participant. All participants must provide a copy of their birth certificate. Football players must be present at registration to weigh-in for team determination.

Kahne finishes 13th in Phoenix

Kasey Kahne said his No. 9 Budweiser Dodge Charger team just couldn’t get the right adjustments made to move the car closer than a 13th-place finish Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway.

“We had a pretty decent finish, but we made a lot of adjustments that didn’t help the car,” the Enumclaw NASCAR Nextel Sprint Cup driver said. “We just haven’t got a handle on what we need to do to make it go faster. We got a decent finish. The pit crew did a good job. We got on and off pit road good. We just have to figure out how to make the car handle a little better.”

Veteran driver Mark Martin won the event.

Kahne continues to hold on to a spot among the Sprint Cup’s top 12 drivers.

Racing continues Sunday from Talladega Superspeedway. Television coverage begins at 10 a.m. on FOX.
