Salsbury wins district tournament

Enumclaw’s Tyler Salsbury won the 16- to 17-year-old boys division Washington Junior Golf Association District Six Championship July 19 and 20 at Riverbend Golf Course in Kent.

Hornet teammate David Smith finished 12th.

Salsbury won the event with a two-round, 138-stroke total. He finished the first round with a 1-under par 71 and the second day at 5-under par 67.

Smith closed out the two days at 164 strokes, 84 for Day 1 and 80 on Day 2.

Both qualified for the state tournament, however, neither will make the trip.

Smith will opt instead for a church mission in Africa, while Salsbury teed off in the Junior Americas Cup in Albuquerque, N.M., an event with teams from 17 states and Canada. He finished with matching two-day totals of 75 strokes on the par-71 course and then finished 1-under Thursday for a three-day total of 220. The Washington Team tied for eighth.

Jared Beals also qualified for state finishing at 85 in the boys 8- to 11-year-old division.

On the girls side, Kelly Sweeney qualified at 166, 83 for both days, in the girls 16- and 17-year-old division. She finished the tournament fourth.

In the girls 8- to 11-year-old division, Lexi Dechon finished third.

Little League off to regional game

The Enumclaw-Kent Senior Baseball Little League team won the state tournament and headed to the regional tournament Monday in Ontario, Calif.

The regional tournament features pool play with the team’s first game is scheduled for today, Wednesday. Also in their pool will be teams from Nevada, Oregon and southern California. The first-place team in the pool moves on, continuing pool play until the championship game Aug. 10. The winner of the regional tournament qualifies for the Senior Baseball World Series in Maine.

The state tournament began for the Kent-Enumclaw team July 17 with a win over Lewis River. The local crew picked up another win July 18, defeating Fort Vancouver. July 21, the gloves came off as the Kent/Chinook team racked up 20 hits against Redmond, ending the game early with a 14-2 win. The team finished the tournament July 24 with a 9-4 win over Redmond.

WRHS’s Smith signs with CWU

White River High graduate Dan Smith has signed a letter of intent to play baseball with Central Washington University. The pitcher, who was a South Puget Sound League 3A all-league honorable mention, helped the Hornets finish with an 11-5 league record, 15-8 overall.

The Wildcats, under the direction of coach Desi Storey, finished the year with a 14-36 overall record and tied for fourth place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

Water polo players at Junior Olympics

Seven girls from Enumclaw will play in the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics national tournament in Huntington Beach, Calif. Competition begins Thursday and continues through Sunday.

Enumclaw High players Ali Ballard, Lindsay Bowden, Logan Erskine, Ali Larrea, Katie Larrea, Becca Messex and Erin Stucker will be participating as part of the Puget Sound Polo team.

This is the largest contingency of Enumclaw players to attend this event in the past few years. Bowden, a recent EHS graduated will be attending Cal Lutheran University this fall. Seniors Ballard and Stucker, juniors Erskine and Messex and sophomores Ali and Katie Larrea are expected to return to the Hornet squad in the spring.

EHS football hosts golf fundraiser

Enumclaw football will host a fundraising golf tournament Aug. 20 at the Enumclaw Golf Course.

Five teams tie for Lee golf lead

Fifty-three players turned out for Thursday’s weekly Lee golf tournament making up 13 teams. Five teams tied for first-place honors at 1-under par.

Kahne takes

second in trucks

Pocono Raceway proved to be a better fit for Enumclaw NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne Saturday night behind the wheel of a truck then Sunday during Sprint Cup racing.

Kahne finished second behind Richard Petty Racing teammate Elliott Sadler Saturday during the Camping World Truck Series inaugural event at the 2.5-mile Pennsylvania track. Kahne, driving a Toyota for Kyle Bush, was leading in the closing laps before a caution. Sadler would take the lead and eventually the win. Kahne has raced in the truck series twice before, winning both starts in 2004.

Sunday, Kahne finished 19th in the Sprint Cup Series, moving him up one spot in drivers standings to 16th.
