Salsbury leads local youth golfers
Tyler Salsbury was the top Enumclaw finisher in the United States Golf Association’s Junior Amateur Qualifier June 22 at Gold Mountain Golf Course in Bremerton, Wash.
Salsbury finished second, two strokes behind the leader, in the boys’ 14- and 15-year-old division, qualifying him for the district tournament. Salsbury finished the 36-hole, one-day tournament fifth overall at 147 strokes, six strokes behind the leader, just missing an opportunity to play in the USGA Junior Amateur at Trump National in New Jersey.
In the same division, Enumclaw’s David Smith also qualified with an 89.
Also at the tournament, Enumclaw’s Jordan Beals finished third in the boys 16- to 17-year-old division to qualify for the district touranment with a 74, four strokes behind the leader. In the same division, Jake Erickson was three strokes behind Beals and also qualified with a sixth-place finish. Christopher Munko of Black Diamond and Kurt Kindsvater of Enumclaw also participated.
In the boys 8- to 11-year-old division, Jared Beals of Enumclaw finished third and qualified for district play.
Ian Runland participated in the boys 12- to 13-year-old division
In the girls 16- to 17-year-old division, Torey Schreiner and Kelly Sweeney qualified for district play with matching fourth-place finishes. Hornet teammates Caitlin Runland and Kaylee Salsbury also played.
The district tournament is scheduled for July 21 and 22 at The Classic.
Severson wins judo divisional title
Five members of Enumclaw’s Ki Haku Judo Club recently participated in the Washington State Games at Shorewood High School in Shoreline.
Gavin Severson won the men’s novice division and placed second in the 15- to 16-year-old boys division. Jade Paterson captured two divisions, winning the 13- to 14-year-old girls division and also taking the crown in the women’s novice division.
Garrett Severson and Kiley Nesper were second-place finishers. The younger Severson, 13, earned his second in the boys 13- to 14-year-old division. Nepper, who is the team’s assistant coach, placed second in the women’s black belt division.
Logan Thomas, 9, finished fourth in the junior division.
Ki Haku Judo Club is affiliated with the Enumclaw’s Parks and Recreation. The group works out twice a week year-round and competes in many tournaments throughout the year.
Meeks posts fastest qualifying pass
Enumclaw’s Dana Meeks posted the fastest pass of any class and qualified fourth out of nine contests in All Harley Drag Racing Association pro fuel competition June 20 and 21 in Kansas City, Mo. Racing distance at the track was shortened from a quarter-mile to an eighth-mile due to safety issues.
Meeks’ top speed was 192.02 mph in 4.5 seconds.

Racing for Meeks continues Aug. 8 and 9 in Bristol, Tenn., Aug. 22 and 23 in Woodburn, Ore., and Oct. 9, 10 and 11 in Rockingham, N.C.
Robinson’s drive seals Lee victory
Sam Robinson’s spectacular drive on the seventh hole put his team at 2-under par during weekly Lee Golf Tournament play Thursday at the Enumclaw Golf Course. In addition to Robinson, the winning team included Tim Marrapodi, Sharon Lovinger and Phillis Brown.
Betty French nailed a 35-foot birdie on the third hole for the second-place team, which also included Frank Mihelich, Kay Smith and Mark Sims.
There was a three-way tie for third.
Kahne earns top 10 finish at Louden
It was another top 10 NASCAR Sprint Cup finish for Enumclaw’s Kasey Kahne and the No. 9 Budweiser Dodge Sunday at Louden, N.H. When the red flag shortened the race due to rain, Kahne was sitting in 10th place.
“The Budweiser Dodge ran great today and we were working our way back toward the front when the rain came,” said Kahne, who started 15th after qualifying was rained out. “There were a lot of cars that got lucky at the end when the rain came in. The guys gave me another great car and something to build on for the upcoming weeks.”
Rookie Joey Logano won the race.
Kahne moved up two spots in drivers’ standings to 13th, three points from the coveted 12th and final spot eligible for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship.
Sprint Cup racing continues Saturday night at Daytona. Local television coverage begins at 4:30 p.m. on TNT.
Parker fares well at amateur tourney
After four days, Lake Tapps’ Sean Parker finished 22nd, 9-over par 297, at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash., during the 83rd Washington State Golf Association men’s amateur championship which finished Friday. Enumclaw High graduate Quin Koplitz also qualified for the tournament.
