Rugby plans fundraiser

The Rainier Plateau Junior Rugby team’s dinner and auction is planned for Nov. 5 at the Buckley Eagles hall on state Route 410. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased by contacting coach Andy Ramsay at 253-330-6816 or a.s.ramsay@comcast.net. In addition to ticket sales, the club is collecting donated auction items.

This is the second year the club will be hosting the preseason dinner and auction to benefit the rugby team.

The Highlanders are a rugby club, a not-for-profit organization, for boys ages 14 to 19 based in the Bonney Lake area. There are no school boundaries or address restrictions so the club draws from the Plateau and plays matches against clubs from all across the state of Washington.

The club is entering its fourth season, and has had more than 100 different young people participate. The club has links to its community, area high schools and alumni players from colleges and international teams. The club relies on dues, fundraising events and the support of local businesses.

Help for college athletes

When it comes to the parents who are involved in the collegiate athletic recruiting process, Jack Renkens has seen it all and he’ll be sharing what he’s learned with parents and student athletes at 7 p.m. Nov. 16 in the Enumclaw High auditorium.

This is a free event sponsored by the EHS Associated Student Body. Parents and athletes from Enumclaw, White River, Bonney Lake and Sumner school districts are welcome.

From his days as a high school coach, administrator and teacher through his time as coach and athletic director at an award-winning NCAA Division II school, Renkens has witnessed the game from all sides.

But it wasn’t until his own daughter became a nationally recruited basketball player he discovered not only how little most student-athletes and their families knew about the recruiting process, but also how many myths existed.

As a result, he founded Recruiting Realities, an organization dedicated to exploding the myths and presenting the realities of athletic recruiting to student-athletes, families, coaches and counselors.

His sought-after program has been featured at thousands of schools across the United States, on numerous television programs and at sports camps from coast to coast. In addition, he is a weekly contributor to several major newspapers and magazines. His message about collegiate athletic recruiting is simple: “It’s a game … know the rules.”
