Despite having no seniors on this year’s squad, Bonney Lake tennis coach Billy Jacobsen has good things to say about his team.
“I think I have the fastest and most athletic new group I have ever had in 17 years of coaching,” Jacobsen said in an e-mail.
This year’s team will be led by returning varsity players Alise McCoy, Olivia Ottinger, Kelsey Kober, Lauren Balzaretti and Molly Miculinich as well as a few from the junior varsity squad.
Among the key members of last year’s team who will not be returning to the courts this year are Emily McCoy, Ashley Reisen, Katie Barrie, jessica Roller and Kaela Gustafson, a large group to lose in a single year.
“I’m really hoping for the best because this is the biggest turnover of girls I have ever had with more than half the varsity being replaced with new faces,” Jacobsen said.
Jacobsen said the weather has prevented the team from getting outside to practice yet so he is still unsure of everyone’s skill level, but said so far he is “very happy how hard everyone is working and participating” during the indoor workouts.
Jacobsen said he is unsure what to expect during the upcoming season as the league has gone through changes, losing some teams and adding another, Decatur.
“My goal is just to have the girls try to improve each day as tennis players, to enjoy the game and we will see where that gets us at the end of the season,” he said.
The season gets underway March 21 at Peninsula High School.
