Four Plateau gymnasts trekked to Sammamish last week for the state championships, an event that brought together athletes from throughout Washington.
Leading the way was Enumclaw High’s Julia Carter, who had qualified in the all-around and finished No. 6 in the final tally. She was joined by EHS teammates Ashley Dickerson (also qualified for the all-around) and Mylee Bonthuis. Also in the competition was White River’s Kylee Trudgeon.
The Plateau foursome competed in a combined 1A/2A/3A field, which counted nearly 140 athletes. The state’s largest schools squared off against other in the Class 4A pool.
Carter’s sixth-place finish in Thursday’s all-around included a trio of Top 10 placings. She was fourth in the vault, tied for seventh on the balance beam and was eighth on the uneven bars. In the floor exercise she tied for 33rd place.
The honors continued to come her way on Day 2 of the meet, when the top 16 in each event squared off. Carter won the vault with an impressive score of 9.65, was eighth in bars and 15th on the beam.
On Day 1, Dickerson tied for 57th in the vault, tied for 70th in bars, was 84th in floor and 86th on beam. Bonthuis competed in the floor exercise (tied for 46th) and vault (tied for 85th).
Trudgeon had qualified for state in the floor exercise, where she tied for 68th, and the vault, where she tied for 73rd.
In the team standings, Enumclaw placed 12th among the 44 schools represented in the 1A/2A/3A competition.
The local gymnasts competed Thursday, Feb. 23. The three-day state meet, staged again at Sammamish High School, continued through Saturday.
