The Enumclaw High track and field crew was hit hard by graduation following last year’s successful campaign, but it appears the Hornets are poised for another productive season, particularly on the girls’ side of things.

“Our girls are looking to place high in state, that’s the goal,” said fourth-year coach Janelle Stussy, who has guided the EHS girls to fifth-place finishes at the Class 3A state meet the past two seasons.

There’s certainly reason for optimism, starting with the return of senior Stephanie Jones, a four-year standout. Jones qualified for state in four events in 2008, placing second in the triple jump and 100-meter hurdles.

Junior Stephanie Schreiner also has come up big in the past, earning a state berth last year in the 400 meters. She’s also a contributor in the long jump and the relays.

The Hornet boys aren’t quite as deep, but have proven veterans in hurdler Abe Kellogg and 400-meter runner Brandon Russell.

Stussy is helped by another good turnout. Again this year she has more than 100 athletes turning out.

She will get a first real look at her Hornets Saturday at Sumner High. The Spartans are again hosting a kickoff jamboree and have invited all the South Puget Sound League 3A schools. Most will be making the trip to Sunset Chev Stadium. Next on the schedule is a March 19, four-team meet at Franklin Pierce High School; aside from the Hornets and the host Cardinals, the meet will include Bonney Lake and Washington.

The Hornets will enjoy just two home meets this season.
