The Sumner Spartans defeated Hockinson 1-0 Tuesday on their home turf, winning in the opening round of the state Class 2A state tournament.
The contest appeared headed into overtime, but Megan Fenton scored a late goal off an assist by Kaylie Rozell.
With the victory, the Spartans advance to the state field of eight. The next game begins at 3 p.m. Saturday and will be played at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner.
On Saturday, Sumner High’s 3-0 soccer victory over Olympic in West Central District play Saturday advanced the Spartans to the Hockinson game.
The scoring from Saturday’s rather lackluster tilt will stick with longtime Sumner coach Robi Turley for reasons only a coach could appreciate.
“We played a really ugly game against Olympic and we did not play well individually as I had to remove several of our best players because they received three mysterious yellow cards,” Turley said. “I didn’t want to risk them getting another one and not being able to play against Hockinson on Tuesday night.”
But Turley had plenty of praise for her squad, which cruised to an 2011 South Puget Sound League 2A crown for the second straight year with an 12-0 record.
“We had contributions from everyone and we truly came together as a team,” she said. “Because of that we won as a team and I really enjoyed that feeling.”
Despite yellow cards directed at key players like Megan Fenton and Kaylie Rozell, the outcome of the encounter was never really in doubt. Goalkeeper Jamie Lange earned the shutout in goal and Spartan defenders kept Olympic shots to a minimum.
It took Sumner’s high-powered offensive attack all of about five minutes to rack up its initial tally, courtesy of midfielder Ellie Degoede, who took an assist from Alyssa Murray and legged one accurately past the unaware Olympic netminder.
The next Sumner score, which came only seconds before intermission, was probably the easiest tally Gabby Degoede will score in her illustrious soccer career. An assist by Makinzie Endicott found Olympic’s goalie hopelessly out of position and Degoede only had to knock the ball home from about five feet out to make the score 2-0.
Most of the second stanza was played in the middle of the field as both contingents slipped into lackluster play, but there was a solitary offensive jewel provided by Brooke Lancaster.
With around five minutes remaining, she launched a rocket that ricocheted off the goal frame and into the goal, past the outstretched arms of the Trojan keeper.
