Sumner High’s baseball team beat the law of probabilities Saturday, when the middle-ranked SPSL 2A team defeated top-ranked Fife High School and took their place in the top two game in the district tournament. The Spartans then fell 7-3 to Kingston High School, giving them second seed for State.
The Spartans defeated Fife 6-4. The game was tied 4-4 through the seventh inning, and Sumner picked up two additional runs to put them over the top in eighth inning overtime.
Brandon Boyd picked up three hits and had a 2-RBI in his three at-bats. He hit one double.
The Kingston loss came hard and heavy, with the Buccaneers racking up four runs by the time the Spartans achieved two in the fourth inning. Kingston achieved runs in every inning but the second; and the seventh, due to the fact that the game was called when the Spartans completed their turn at-bat.
The Spartans’ Luc Powers-Hubbard achieved two hits during four at-bats, and batted two doubles.
Brandon Boyd had two hits in four at-bats and 1-RBI.
