Sumner High’s baseball team made school history this weekend, doing what no Spartan roster has done before and qualifying for the State 2A semifinals.

“Last year’s team tied the 1985 team for deepest state tourney run, with a trip to the state quarterfinals,” Adcox said.

To do it, the Spartans bested Aberdeen High 1-0 in round one, followed by North Thurston 5-4.

The Aberdeen game looked like a whole lot of nothing for the first six innings and the top of the seventh. But Tysen Fischen batted in the run that put the Spartans over the top.

From the mound, Logan Christensen kept the Bobcats at bay with eight strikeouts.

The North Thurston game was a more stressful affair, with the Spartans remaining run-less for the four innings while the Rams racked up three. The Spartans made up for lost time with four runnings in the fifth, and both teams scored a run in the seventh, keeping Sumner a notch above at game’s end.

Christian Parsons had 2-RBI and hit a double.

Bryan Adkins had 1-RBI and two hits, one a double and the other a triple. He went to bat three times.

Sumner plays Lynden High May 25 in the semifinal match-up.
