Sumner High’s Friday night road trip to Purdy turned ugly as the Spartans were shut out by the Peninsula Seahawks 33-0 in South Puget Sound League 3A action at Roy Anderson Field..
Peninsula quarterback J.R. Grosshans accounted for 257 yards in total offense, scoring a pair of touchdowns and throwing for another.
Sumner’s best scoring opportunity came after Peninsula scored the game’s first TD, but was whistled for a penalty when a Seahawk spiked the ball in the end zone.
Sumner got the ball in excellent field position after the 15-yard penalty was assessed on the kickoff.
The Spartans drove inside the Peninsula 20 with 3:13 remaining in the first half. On third down-and-short, quarterback Aaron Clark rolled out on an option play, but the pitch was fumbled and the Seahawks recovered.
Peninsula scored 23 second-half points and held the Spartans to no first downs in the half.
The Seahawks held Sumner to 137 yards of offense, including just four yards through the air.
Alex Griffith led the Spartans with 53 yards on 10 carries and he had one reception.
Clark rushed for 32 yards on seven tries, but completed just 2-of-8 passes and was intercepted twice.
Sumner (0-1) will host White River (1-0) in SPSL 3A action at 7 p.m. Friday at Sunset Chev Stadium.
