Sumner High senior Hillary Norris ended her career with a second-place finish in the 800-meter run at Saturday’s Class 3A state track and field championship at Mount Tahoma High in Tacoma.

Norris, who has battled an injured Achilles tendon most of the season, finished in 2 minutes, 17.83 seconds, trailing first-place Courtney Zalud of Mount Spokane.

Norris stayed in the middle of the pack, but started to pick up her pace at the 500-meter mark.

“Me and my coach have been visualizing picking up my pace about the 250-meter mark,” Norris said. “I got a little excited and went a little before the 250 mark and paid for it in the last 30 or 40 meters.”

Norris was scheduled to race in the 1,600, but her doctors advised her not to run.

Sumner junior Ashlee Sincraugh finished seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 59.67.

In the field events, freshman Michaela Trulson was 12th in the pole vault at 8 feet, 6 inches; junior Kayla Roberts was 16th in the shot put at 33-2.25 and junior Jessica Vandergiessen was 12th in the triple jump at 33-08.25.

The lone Sumner boy at the meet – junior Kevin Johnson – finished 14th in the pole vault, clearing 12 feet.
