SWIMMING: Sumner’s Powers-Hubbard makes state during final meet

Connor Powers-Hubbard closed out Sumner High’s last regular-season meet with a bang, a state-qualifying time and a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke in the Spartans’ 114-70 league 3A loss to Bonney Lake Jan. 26.

Powers-Hubbard posted a time of 1 minute, 3.22 seconds. The state qualifying time is 1.04.30. He also won the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.25.

Zane Gustafson won the 200 freestyle with a district-qualifying time of 2.00.97 and was second in the 100 breaststroke with a 1.10.92.

Diver Evan Quaschnik qualified for district competition during an 11-dive meet Jan. 23.

The Spartans used the meet as a time to say goodbye to its seniors Brandon Richison, Tristan Hanon and Michael Ulmer.

Against Bonney Lake, Sam Parks bettered his 200 freestyle time by four seconds to finish third in 2.25.10. He also dropped more than two seconds in his 100 freestyle.

Downing raced to his best time of the season in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Sam Rigsby bettered his 50 freestyle time and also dropped in his 100 backstroke. Tanner Harrison dropped more than six seconds in his 100 butterfly. Severn Anderson bettered his time in the 100 butterfly. Josh Goodsell swam tough in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke.
