The White River High boys secured a league championship Thursday afternoon with a pair of track and field victories.
Competing at Fife, the Hornets slipped past the home Trojans 67-65 and whipped Clover Park 76-53. The double-dual victories allowed the White River boys to finish the South Puget Sound League 2A season undefeated.
The Hornet girls split Thursday’s decisions to finish in a tie for second. They demolished Clover Park 125-23 but fell to Fife 82-68.
Attention now turns to the postseason, beginning with subdistrict action Friday and Saturday at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner. That will whittle the field for the May 17-19 West Central District meet, also slated for Sumner.
Thursday, the Hornet boys’ twin wins were highlighted by Marcus Dickson and Devin Liebel, who won two events each. Dickson cruised to victories in both the 3,200- and 1,600-meters, which Liebel won both hurdle races.
Other victories for the Hornet boys came from Austin May at 400 meters and Blake Maresh in the shot put.
Earning second-place points were Nick Wells at 200 meters; Kody Gould, 400 and 3,200 meters; Wes Fueston, 800 meters; Chris Fisher, 1,600 meters; and Brian Mitchell, discus. Also taking second place was the 4×100 relay crew of Hunter Hendricks, Wells, Josh Miller and May.
