White River High’s boys golf team kept play close with Franklin Pierce Thursday on the Cardinals’ home course at Brookdale Golf Club, but in the end came up shy, 65-63.

“It came down to the last person,” coach Al Novak said. “We had a solid performance, five of our six players were in double figures. It was nice to play that well on somebody else’s course.”

Trevor Lubking led the Hornets, shooting 46, but scoring 12 points. Cory Tunnell, 43, Dalton Reynolds, 44, and Dylan Crocco, 46, were right behind with 11 points each. Connor Williams rounded out the Hornets’ card with a 44 for 10 points.

Tunnell led the Hornets with a 40 for 14 points Sept. 9 in an 83-57 loss to Peninsula. Reynolds finished at 42 for 11 points and freshman Ryne Peterson, making his first varsity start, finished at 46 for eight points.

The Hornets travel to Nisqually Valley Golf Course to face Yelm Thursday. Tee time is 3:15 p.m.
