The White River boys claimed a subdistrict track and field championship Saturday while the Hornet girls secured second place.
The steller finishes assure a healthy Hornet representation this weekend, when athletes return to Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner for the West Central District meet. There, the top five finishers in each event will qualify for the state Class 2A championships, to be contested May 24-26 at Mount Tahoma High in Tacoma.
At subdistricts, the Hornet boys were paced by four-time title holder Marcus Dickson, who won the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter races and also ran a leg on the winning 4×400 relay team. He was joined in that winning effort by Kody Gould, Austin May and Devin Liebel. Also a subdistrict champion for the White River boys was Blake Maresh in the shot put.
The Hornet girls were headed by two-time winners Cassidy France and Lauryn Wate. France topped the field in both the 100- and 200-meter sprints and Wate won at 800 and 3,200 meters, while also finishing second at 1,600 meters.
Also winning subdistrict titles for the Hornet girls were Kelly Coyle in the pole vault and the foursome of Johnna Coughlin, France, Cassidy Kunst and Jade Crawford, who won both the 4×100 and 4×200 relay races.
