Forward and former White River High player Arica Slawson was among 18 student-athletes recently named to the Central Washington University women’s soccer all-decade team for the decade from 2000-2009.
Slawson played for the Wildcats in 2005-06.
Seventeen of the 18 all-decade players earned all-conference honors at least once during their Wildcat careers, including five players who received all-conference accolades three times.
In addition to selecting an all-decade team of student-athletes, the 2008 squad was named the women’s soccer “team of the decade” at the Ellensburg, Wash., university. The 2008 squad posted a 10-7-3 overall record and finished third in the Great Northern Athletic Conference standings behind national champion Seattle Pacific and national quarterfinalist Western Washington. That team also earned the program’s first-ever regional ranking and was led by the team’s first all-NSCAA West Region selection.
Basketball team rockets to top
The Rockets, a basketball team of girls from Puyallup, Sumner, Buckley and Lake Tapps, started the 2010 season with a championship in the seventh-grade division of the Oregon Prep Basketball Tournament.
The team, which participates in the Sumner/Bonney Lake/Puyallup recreation department’s joint select basketball league, practices weekly and plays in local and out-of-area tournaments. The team participated in and won the seventh- and eighth-grade select league with mostly a corps of sixth-grade players.
The girls are good students, too. They currently have a combined 3.8 grade-point average.
Dunning, McGinnes lead Peak gymnast
Level 4 gymnasts Elise Dunning and Hannah McGinnes qualified Peak Gymnastics Level 4 girls team to the 2010 Washington State Level Four Championships March 24 and 25.
Dunning, who joined the Peak program in October, hit four consistent 8-plus routines to total 34.8 in the all-around competition and easily qualify for the upcoming state championships to be hosted by Northshore Gymnastics April 16-17 on the campus of Inglemoor High School in Woodinville.
McGinnes, who moved up to Peak’s competitive team from the recreational program less than a year ago, garnered a state qualification at the last rotation with a season-high 8.35 bars routine.
Also participating in the competition were Level 5 sectional qualifiers Taylor Amsbaugh and Sarah Wooten, who accumulated season-high results in a number of events, but were unsuccessful in making the state championship cut. The top 40 to 45 percent in the state qualify.
The Peak gymnasts will be at the Region II, Pacific Northwest championships in Auburn Thursday through Sunday.
