The following was reported by White River coach Rich Valdez.
The White River girls did exactly what coach Rich Valdez wanted them to do.
“Our squad is not one with high numbers and loaded with powerhouse talent like some of the top teams in the state,” he said. “We are a small group with some very motivated girls. With small numbers comes high expectations. When you set your goals high you have to demand alot out of a small group. This group is being extremely coachable right now and it’s exciting. They are coming together and improving every week. “
The team was without Sam Mitchell, who would have added to the team point total. Senior Morgan Shirey continued to have good outings, finishing third.
“The great thing about Mo is she is never satisfied with her results,” Valdez said. “Win or lose she is always asking me, “what do I need to improve on?” We fully expect her to be a state placer this year in the highly-competitive lower weights.”
Sophomore Kendra Blue finished third. “Kenny is our most improved wrestler so far this year,” Valdez said. “She is a perfect example of being coachable. Every week she makes adjustments in practice to improve on the previous weeks efforts.”
Freshman Emma Walker also finished third and continues to improve.
Junior Kylie Norton took home second. Kylie made the finals in this one and wrestled very well. We’re looking for big things out of her this year and she will be one of our veteran team leaders next year. She is another ultra-coachable young lady.
Senior Dylan Fagan also made the finals and finished second. Dylan had a great bracket with state champ Van Scoyoc and another state placer who was seeded higher in this tournament, Jasmine Jones of Washington High. Dylan pinned Jones and was pinned in the finals. The stiff competition Fagan has been seeing week in and out is just what we need.
Sophomore Hannah Lewandowski finished third. Hannah had a chance to tangle with top heavyweight KC Moulden from Enumclaw and it was a good test so she can see where she is at. She keeps getting better each week in every position. She is another young wrestler we will be looking to for leadership in the future.
The girls head to Kelso this Friday, Jan. 4, to compete in the Kelso Duals and the Kelso Tournament Saturday, Jan. 5.
