The White River Hornets continued their record-setting ways during the weekend’s Class 3A state track and field championships in Tacoma.

Competing against the best the state of Washington has to offer, the Hornets boys claimed 10th place and the girls were 35th.

Coach Jerry Scheidt said the big show at Mount Tahoma High School was a fitting finale for this year’s Hornets, which established nine school records – five on the boys side and four for the girls.

Entering the meet with high expectations were the brotherly foursome of Kramer Green, Collin Green, Marcus Dickson and Mat Dickson, who combine to run the 1,600-meter relay. They held the state’s best time during the regular season and withstood all challengers in Tacoma, taking the state title with a clocking of 3 minutes, 21.40 seconds.

The race was among the most dramatic of the three-day weekend, with three teams finishing less than a quarter-second apart. Liberty of Issaquah finished at 3:21.47 and Bonney Lake was third at 3:21.62. Adding to the drama was the fact that Mount Rainier, which showed itself to be a favorite during preliminary competition, had a runner fall during the race.

The top Hornet placers in individual events were Collin Green and Kramer Green, each with third-place showing. Collin Green was third in the 400-meter run with a time of 49.84 and Kramer Green was third in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing in 38.93.

Austin Shirey wound up sixth in the pole vault, clearing 13 feet, and Mat Dickson was 11th in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:24.40.

Among White River girls, Carley McCutchen had qualified for state in both hurdle races.

She finished sixth in the 300 meters with a time of 46.42 despite competing with a stress fracture in her foot, an injury sustained the week before during West Central District competition. McCutchen also ran the 100-meter hurdles but failed to advance to the finals.

The girls 800-meter relay team finished 10th in the preliminary heat with a time of 1:46.81. Making up the team were Alysa Aasheim, Cassidy France, Jessica Lindner and McCutchen.

Aasheim placed 11th in the javelin with a throw of 103 feet, 4 inches.

Showing how tough this year’s state field was, Lauryn Wate established school records with times of 2:22.75 in the 800 meters and 5:11.16 in the 1,600 meters. Those times were good for 11th and 10th place, respectively.
