WRHS, EHS Hornets well represented in spring postseason sports

EHS was seeded No. 2 in district softball and No. 3 in baseball.

With their regular seasons in the record books, the Plateau’s spring teams are headed into postseason play. Here’s a quick look at where things stand this week.

BASEBALL

The District 3/4 baseball tourney began May 13, runs through May 17 and will eventually send seven teams to the Class 3A state tournament.

The 16-team district tourney includes both Enumclaw High and White River. EHS opened as the No. 3 seed and White River was slotted at No. 13.

Enumclaw began tourney play by hosting No. 6 North Thurston while White River traveled to face No. 12 South Kitsap. Results of those Tuesday games came too late to be included here.

Enumclaw will play again May 17 (with an opening-round win) or May 14 (with a loss). White River’s opener was a loser-out contest; a victory would have WR playing on the road on the 14th.

FASTPITCH

The Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey will be home to the District 3/4 fastpitch tournament, a two-day event that advances the top seven finishers to the Class 3A state tourney.

Sixteen teams – including No. 2-seeded Enumclaw and No. 9 White River – will begin play May 15 in a double-elimination format. Four squads will be eliminated on Day 1 with the rest returning May 17, all chasing a state berth.

As of Sunday night, Enumclaw’s first district opponent was identified only as the No. 15 seed. White River will open against No. 8 River Ridge.

BOYS SOCCER

Both Enumclaw High and White River earned a spot in the District 3/4 tournament that will send seven teams to Class 3A state competition.

The 16-team district tourney kicked off May 10 and both Plateau teams were in action.

Enumclaw entered as the No. 13 seed and traveled to face No. 12 Evergreen of Vancouver. The Hornets kept their season alive with a 3-0 victory at McKenzie Stadium. Goals were provided by Brian Silva, Nery Ruiz (off an assist by Zane Wirkkala) and Aiden Navarro.

Tuesday, EHS faced No. 4 Gig Harbor in another loser-out game.

White River, seeded No. 8 into the tourney, had a tough draw, facing No. 1 Silas High. The Tacoma school showed why it was so highly regarded, blanking White River 3-0. That sent the Buckley crew into a Tuesday, loser-out contest against Mountain View.

The Tuesday games were back-to-back affairs with both Plateau schools playing at Tacoma’s Stadium Bowl. Results came too late to be included here.

BOYS GOLF

Both Enumclaw High and White River participated in this week’s (May 12-13) district tourney that advanced teams and individual players to the Class 3A state championships.

Results came too late to appear in the print edition of the Courier-Herald.

District play was at the McCormick Woods course in Port Orchard. From there, the top seven teams and 16 individuals head to the state tourney, set for May 20-21 at The Creek at Qualchan in Spokane.

GIRLS GOLF

Allenmore Golf Course in Tacoma played host to this week’s West Central District tournament and both Enumclaw and White River golfers were in the mix.

Results from the May 12-13 competition came too late to be included here.

At the conclusion of the tourney the top seven teams and top 16 individuals advance to the Class 3A state tournament, to be played May 20-21 at the Indian Canyon course in Spokane.

GIRLS TENNIS

Both Enumclaw and White River will be represented this week when area tennis players gather in Kent for the West Central District championships.

A Plateau foursome will take to the courts at the Boeing Employees Tennis Club on May 14-15, all hoping to advance to the May 23-24 Class 3A state tourney in Vancouver.

During last week’s NPSL 3A tournament, Enumclaw’s doubles team of Haley Dumontet and Audrey Firnkoess battled their way to the tourney title. Also advancing from EHS was singles entry Autumn Vogel who will take the No. 6 seed into district play.

Moving on from White River is standout Cydnee Chapin who climbed to the finals in singles play, eventually earning the No. 2 seed.

BOYS TENNIS

For boys, the regular tennis season is a fall sport but the state tournament waits until spring.

This year’s Class 3A tourney will include the Enumclaw High doubles team of William Stuenkel and King Gisa. They earned their state berth with a strong showing in the late-October district tournament.

State play is set for May 23-24 at the Vancouver Tennis Center.

BOYS & GIRLS TRACK

The postseason process is about to begin for the Plateau’s track and field athletes.

Runners, jumpers and throwers from Enumclaw and White River high schools have wrapped up their regular seasons and now head into the NPSL 3A meet, set for May 14 and 16 at French Field in Kent. From there, the top seven finishers in each event will advance to the district meet on May 21 and 23, also at French Field.

From district competition, the top seven in each event will earn a trip to the three-day Class 3A state meet, set for May 29-31 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

One of the athletes to keep an eye on in the postseason is White River High junior Trista Turgeon, who recently broke her school's hurdles record and is ranked 1st in state for the 3A hurdles. Contributed photo
