Quick hands, quick feet, quickly racing up and down the floor – all combined Friday night to propel the White River High girls to a 67-48 victory over the host Enumclaw Hornets.
The visitors scored the first six points of the game, gave up a pair of buckets, then jumped out to a 15-4 lead that would never be relinquished.
“I like the say the kids are focused right now,” White River coach Chris Gibson said. “They’re showing a lot of intensity. They’re excited to play.”
That certainly showed during the first half, which ended with White River on the winning side of a 37-18 score. The second period saw White River clicking at its best, going on a 14-0 run that started with a Jessica Bush hoop. For the next three and a half minutes, the game belonged to junior Brooke Paulson, who dropped in 12 points during that span, including a trio of 3-point bombs.
But the Enumclaw High girls showed they weren’t about to give up.
After falling behind by 30 points midway through the third quarter, they went on a 23-4 run that saw five different EHS players fill the hoop.
The rally took the score to 56-45 and had the crowd fired up, but may have drained Enumclaw’s tank. White River was able to respond with baskets by Paulson and Sabra Sproul, along with four free throws – two by Cassidy France and two by Sproul – that gave White River a 19-point bulge with less than four minutes to play.
The Enumclaw rally was officially snuffed.
White River was led by Paulson’s 24 points and 16 by Sproul. Paulson is averaging 17.3 points per game, second among South Puget Sound League 3A players, and Sproul is averaging 12 per contest, good for seventh in the league.
Enumclaw had three players score in double figures, led by Hailey Hall with 13 points and Hayley Kohler with 11. Katina Ferguson added 10 points and had a monster night under the boards, pulling down 20 rebounds. Kohler is 12th among league scorers at 10.9 per game.
