Four of the five wrestlers White River High’s girls team took to last year’s state tournament placed in the top eight and all four return to the Hornet lineup this season.

“We return all our state placers and a few extras,” coach Joe Klein said.

Back on the mat are sophomore Sam Mitchell, who placed sixth at Mat Classic, sophomore Dylan Fagan and juniors Mikaela Kilcup and Kamyriah Padgett, who each finished seventh. Sam Lovelace was the Hornets’ lone graduate.

As a team the Hornets finished 12th.

By this season’s first match, Klein expects about 14 girls on the roster for the fourth-year program. He said they are working hard and, with the experience they bring to the program, they are hitting the ground running.

“We’re expecting great things from the girls this season,” he said.

As in the past, the girls schedule will closely follow the boys, with the girls matching up as best they can with those school’s who also have female wrestling teams.
