White River High’s girls’ wrestling team plans to steam into the Tacoma Dome Friday for Mat Classic, the state wrestling tournament, like a runaway train.
The Hornets finished third at Saturday’s Region I tournament behind Emerald Ridge and Rogers and qualified five wrestlers for the state tournament.
Mikaela Kilcup led the Hornets’ regional attack with the 145-pound championship. She earned it on an injury default, but it gives her prime seeding into Friday’s state tournament where she will open against Emma Fredare of Tumwater.
Sam Lovelace earned her spot with a runner-up finish at 112 pounds. She lost a 5-1 contest to Federal Way’s Bianca Airzpe in the final and will face Chelsea Reynosa of Battle Ground in the state opener.
The Hornets also got third-place finishes from Dylan Fagan and Sam Mitchell. At state, Fagan kicks off with Rainier’s Nicole Morris in the 140-pound bracket.
Mitchell, at 160 pounds, will face Genesis Gonzalez of Warden for her opening match.
Kamy Padgett will also make the trip to state with the Hornets. Her fourth-place finish at the regional tournament earned her a matchup with Alysha Gash of Burlington-Edison at the state 171-pound division.
At the regional contest, the Hornets also picked up points from Jesslyn Blue’s eighth-place finish.
