One more round of soccer playoffs brought one more victory for the White River High girls, who now find themselves in some elite company, indeed.
The Hornets escaped Federal Way Memorial Stadium Saturday with a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Klahowya Eagles, a triumph that pushed coach Charlie Carlier and his White River crew into the state Class 2A final four. The Hornets join East Valley-Spokane, Archbishop Murphy and Sehome as the last ones standing. The latter two are postseason veterans, having placed first and third, respectively, in last year’s Class 2A state tournament.
The final four will gather at Sparks Stadium in downtown Puyallup for Friday’s semifinal contests and Saturday’s finales. The Hornets will take on East Valley-Spokane at 6 p.m. Friday, while Sehome and Archbishop Murphy will battle at 8.
Friday’s losers return to Sparks Stadium at noon Saturday to play for third- and fourth-place honors. Friday’s winners will square off at 4 p.m. Saturday for the state 2A title.
East Valley, a school near the Idaho state line, has built a record similar to White River’s. The 15-6 Knights started 2-4, then rattled off 13 victories in their final 15 games. The Hornets began 2-3 before winning 13 of their last 14 to build a record of 15-4 heading into the final weekend of plan.
The Knights went 10-2 to win the Great Northern League while the Hornets were second in the South Puget Sound League 2A with a division mark of 11-3. The SPSL 2A champions from Sumner High reached Saturday’s state semifinals before being eliminated by Sehome.
White River’s postseason journey began with a 3-0 victory Nov. 10 over Black Hills at Tumwater Stadium. The Hornets took a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to a goal by Cassidy France in the 35th minute. Ashley Powell provided a cushion with a goal at 47 minutes and France added the final tally in the 66th minute. Kylie Englebert recorded the shutout in goal.
Saturday’s quarterfinal contest in Federal Way delivered 40 minutes of scoreless soccer from White River and Klahowya, a secondary school serving students in seventh through 12th grades in the Central Kitsap School District. The Hornets prevailed in the first overtime, courtesy of a goal by Morgan Brown. Englebert again blanked the opponents.
