The White River High girls were involved in one of the most exciting soccer weeks in recent memory, needing a shootout to ring up a Thursday night victory, just 48 hours after going into double overtime for a win.

Thursday’s South Puget Sound League 2A win over Franklin Pierce improved the Hornets’ record to 3-2 in league play and 4-3 overall.

White River jumped on the scoreboard quick as Cassidy France scored in the game’s opening minute, but went into intermission on the short end of a 2-1 score. The Hornets’ Regan Speyer tied the game at 47 minutes and France added a second goal just two minutes later. It appeared White River might sneak away with a hard-fought win in regulation, but the Cardinals registered a game-tying goal in the 79th minute, forcing overtime. Two overtime periods settled nothing and the teams had to go into a shootout to determine a winner.

White River started last week needing a pair of overtime periods to net a 4-3 victory over Eatonville.

The Hornets’ Ashley Powell and the Cruisers’ Michaela Graddy scored first-half goals, but it was the final 15 minutes of regulation that saw plenty of fireworks. France broke the tie at 66 minutes, but Graddy immediately answered. France scored again at 79 minutes, but Eatonville’s Alex Phillips tied things in the final minute to send things beyond regulation time.

Finally, in the second overtime period, France ended the contest and completed her hat trick with a goal off a Powell assist.

The Hornets will be looking for a key SPSL 2A victory Thursday when they host the tough Sumner Spartans. White River already played a league game this week, hitting the road Tuesday to challenge Washington High.
