The White River High volleyball squad went from the highest high to the lowest low in one ill-fated Friday, the first day of the West Central III/Southwest IV District volleyball tournament at Auburn Mountainview High School.
The Hornets, who shared the South Puget Sound League 3A crown with Auburn Mountainview at 7-1 during the regular season, had gained the No. 1 seed out of the subdistricts by beating both Kennedy Catholic and Auburn Mountainview in five sets the previous weekend.
The Hornets may have taken their initial Friday foe for granted, falling to the sixth-seeded Peninsula High Seahawks 25-20, 26-24, 22-25 and 16-25.
Three hours later, the Hornets’ dreams of a journey to the state tournament at Kennewick’s Toyota Center were squelched by North Kitsap’s Vikings who downed White River 14-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-23.
“Overall, we played well all season long, but not in districts,” first-year coach Stryder Argo said. “At this point it comes down to which teams play consistent volleyball and that wasn’t us on Friday. If you don’t play well at this level, you will lose and that was exactly what happened.”
