Backed by the champions Trevor Kurtz and Brandon Short, the White River High wrestling team finished sixth among the 13 teams at the Panther Invite in Bonney Lake Saturday.
Class 3A Bonney Lake won the tournament with 218.5 points, followed by Centralia, Kentridge, Mercer Island, Peninsula and White River, which finished with 102.5 points.
Kurtz cruised to an 11-1 major decision over teammate Bryce Thompson in the 120-pound title round. As the second wrestler at that weight, Thompson earned no team points for his finish.
Short topped Casey Larson of Peninsula 4-2 for his 145-pound title.
The Hornets’ Brennon Gulin finished third at 170 pounds.
Andre Fails was fourth at 220. Chris Skinner picked up a fifth-place medal at 182.
WRHS’s Brant McGuire earned a sixth-place finish at 285 and Dakota Meadows was eighth at 160.
