Today, I filed a lawsuit against seven school districts, demanding that they stop using special levies to pay supplemental contracts for teachers. This is not a step I want to take. But four years after McCleary v. Washington, the Legislature has failed to provide adequate education funding and it has failed to create an equitable funding system.

A Pierce County man in his 20s tested positive for the Zika virus. The man likely caught the virus recently while in Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory known to have mosquitoes infected with the Zika virus.
Due to a sudden shortage in available parking spaces, the Bonney Lake Food Bank is again considering moving somewhere else in town. On July 7, the city took control of half of the gravel lot behind the food bank, which has been used for staging clients for the food bank and vehicle storage for East Pierce Fire and Rescue, the Bonney Lake Police Department and the city.
Today Prosecutor Mark Lindquist declined to file charges against Mario D. Carey, 45, in connection with the shooting of Kathryn New, 60, on April 13, 2016 in Graham, Washington. New was shot after she pointed a pistol at a bail enforcement agent during an attempt by bail enforcement agents to apprehend her son, Aaron New, at her home.

On Wednesday, Justice Henderson, 17, was arraigned on charges of attempted murder in the first degree and unlawful possession of a firearm in the second degree. The charges are in relation to a shooting in May of this year that was allegedly an act of revenge. Bail was set at $1,000,000.
The name “Sumner” itself was literally drawn out of a hat. The town was called Franklin, but the Post Office said there were too many Franklins in Washington, so the town needed to select a new name
